Dan Johnson - "The Little Things That Run the World: A Survey of Arthropods in Our Grassland Ecosystem"

  • Lethbridge Naturalists' Society PO Box 1691 Lethbridge, AB Canada (map)

The ecosystems of the river valley, surrounding hills, foothills, drier rangeland, and badlands of our region have a diverse community of insects, arachnids, collembolans, and crustaceans. The arachnids include many important predators and decomposers, and we have a little of everything: spiders, scorpions, pseudoscorpions, wind scorpions, mites, ticks, and harvestmen. Insects are numerous and diverse, and although sometimes annoying, are essential for a healthy ecological food web. Crustaceans are often aquatic, but some work the soil. We will learn to recognize interesting examples.
